Wisdom, Trust, Experience
Therapy is part science and part art. And it works best with a therapist who has been around the bend, a lot. Working in community mental health, as I have for over 30 years, there aren't many experiences, illnesses, or circumstances that I haven't seen. I have a doctoral degree (but everyone just calls me Coleen) that has prepared me to tie together the many factors that impact physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual health, for better or worse. Your story is unique, for sure. But one thing I know is that a good therapist paired with a willing client are the ingredients for improved quality of life.
There aren't a lot of requirements to be a good candidate for therapy. Most people come to therapy already doing the best they can with what they have. It takes patience and persistence to try something different, change a habit, and get to know yourself. If you can come regularly, share courageously, and keep an open mind, positive change will happen.
Plant a seed, take care of it, and it will grow. Humans are just like that.
